SELLWOOD PASSIVE HOUSE
We are also calling this the “Facet House” due to the interesting angular shapes we achieved with the form.
This home is located on a typical 50'x100' flat lot with good southern exposure. The roof was designed to optimize the 9.9kW Solar PV array to provide as much energy as the home uses and an electric car for the year.
We used reclaimed wood from the 100 year old home that was on the lot originally as interior finishes as well as FSC certified framing and finish lumber and other low carbon, local materials.
Instead of filling in the old foundation, we turned it into a Passive Swimming Pool! 8-12” of insulation all around, a variable speed pump, and an automatic cover help keep the water warm through half the year. A removable greenhouse over the pool helps keep it swimmable the rest of the time…If you are going ot build a pool in Portland, you need to figure out how to use it more than 2 months a year, right?!
Custom tile work from Tempest Tile and amazing wood from Zena Forest products help add to the livable charm of this warm, modern home.
